Fuel For Thought: The Opportunity for Plastics Manufacturers in the Appalachian Region

September 28, 2022 – 1:30 – 2:00 PM EST

Learn about an opportunities for regional plastics manufacturers to expand and build profitability. The availability of shale gas locally has made manufacturing of plastic products that utilize HDPE and LLDPE cheaper in the Appalachian Region. Greater consumer spending is increasing demand for goods that use plastic. Manufacturing activity has risen and supported higher demand for related plastics. Dr. Palanki has researched the costs to manufacture plastic goods in China and Appalachia. The results may surprise you.

Speaker

Dr. Srinivas Palanki, Professor and Chair, Dept. of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, West Virginia University

Dr. Palanki is the professor and chair for the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at West Virginia University. His research focuses on the application of systems engineering tools to problems in engineering and biology. HIs research group has made theoretical contributions to real-time optimization of finite-time processes, nonlinear robust control and modeling of nonlinear processes. Experimental applications include implementation of systems engineering tools to a pilot-scale fluidized bed hydrochlorination reactor (Mitsubishi Polysilicon), polymerization reactors (Honeywell), lab-in-a-chip (Applied Liquid Logic), protection against UV-induced skin carcinogenesis (Mitchell Cancer Institute), improvement in baffle-making process (Metalforms), and optimization of methanol production (Natgasoline).
